Self Storage for your Steel Building

The good thing about steel buildings is that they are highly functional in usage and utility. When it comes to quick construction and long lasting buildings, most people find that steel buildings are the best option. They are durable, eco-friendly, and are usually constructed much faster than buildings using other materials; costs are usually lower compared to traditional building methods; they are lighter weight; they are easier to maintain; and they carry a reduced risk of fire. They are also resistant to termites, creeping, cracks, splitting and rotting, and increasing durability.

Steel buildings also offer interior self storage systems which has become the newest benefit of the construction alternative.  The wonderful idea behind all this is that it allows steel building owners to convert their vacant space into self storage facilities.  This is a major bonus in commercial steel buildings. For any space that you have in your steel building, you can simply convert any of these spaces to an interior self storage system.

These self storage systems are a very profitable conversion allowing spaces that are idle; they are becoming a good way to be turned into a good source of income. Self storage systems in steel buildings are equipped very well with temperature controls and different features that make them a perfect area to store commercial storage.  Most companies out there such as: liquor companies, pharmacies, toiletries etc. need a good place to store such things especially in a temperature controlled area.

Converting an area in a steel building into a self storage system is easy! In a matter of just a few months, you can turn your steel building into a commercial self storage. This is very popular and is being done everywhere, its revenue generating as well as profitable.  Many companies are investing their time and money in the self storage process because self storage facilities are quite useful and are in high demand in the commercial sector.

Windows for your Steel Building

Windows are a very important accessory for your steel building. They can make your steel building look brighter, modern and beautiful.  Aside from adding aesthetics, windows are important as they allow ventilation and lighting of any area in the building.  Galvanized or covered with aluminum framing, this will make your windows much more durable and will last for years to come. They will become less prone to destruction that is usually caused by poor weather conditions.  When ordering windows while purchasing your steel building, it will help to avoid discrepancies that are related to dimensions.

There are many types of windows to consider, down below we will talk about the different types of windows.  Most steel building companies have various sizes of windows for you to select from. Each selection will depend on the owners taste of course as well as the placement in your steel building.  Here below are the most popular types of windows:

Horizontal Slide Windows: They have overlapping sashes that slide horizontally; providing lighting and ventilation to the building. These may have features like half screen, latch, tainted glasses, weather stripping etc.

Single Hung Windows: They are fixed at the one end and movable on the other. These may also have additional features.

Slim Line Windows: These windows cannot be opened and are fixed and closed. Thus, these are basically used for letting the light in or enjoying a view of the outside. Many steel building owners opt for them to add on the appearance of their steel buildings and offices.

The windows that are described above can be insulated or non insulated, self framing or requiring sub framing etc. This all depends on the buyer and his/her building requirements. Windows are not usually included in steel building kits, however they do come completely assembled for easy installation in your steel structure.

If you’re considering installing windows in your steel building, you might want to start thinking about different designs. For more information please visit us at www.norsteel.com

Durability of Steel Building Design

With metal and carbon utilized in its production, other metals such as molybdenum or tungsten are used to create high-speed steel.  Many other metals for example molybdenum or tungsten are utilized to conceive high-speed steel. After the supplement of chromium and nickel to steel at high pace, we now have stainless steel.

All aforementioned metals are used to create steel alloys of higher value and can be used for all kinds of things.  There are numerous other entails and methods that are conceived by steelmakers to advance value prefabricated steel building as a lone heat remedy furnaces and slow chilling methods to command the hardness and temper.  Iron is proved to be one of the best steel building designs and can be utilized for producing devices and utensils, and pre-engineered structures.  Steel is one of the best construction components prefabricated buildings. This entails that value should be utilized for these structures should be of high quality. Iron has high ductility and malleability and can be molded in diverse types for construction.

The proficiency of an eternal pre-engineered iron alloy construction is due to its building or high degree iron alloy which presents a survival rate of 25 to 30 years for iron alloy buildings. These components such as iron has numerous benefits such as straightforward to construct, sustain, blaze security, durability and recycling capacity.  Iron is a steel luxury, but worth every penny. Its benefits will definitely pay off!

Steel Buildings for your Auto Shop

Using metal for commercial, industrial and auto shops has increased.  The cost of a steel building is 15-20 % of the total cost of constructing a building. This also includes land cost, labor, plumbing, electrical, heating and air conditioning installation and interior finish. Technological advances in metal products and materials have led to the development of structural systems that are compatible with more traditional construction materials.

Designers are combining a steel building with masonry, glass and wood exterior facades to meet the aesthetic requirements of customers.  This will preserve the inherent characteristics of metal building systems. And as a result the uses for metal buildings are now office buildings, showrooms, retail stores, warehouses, factories and auto shops.

Some advantages to owning a steel building for an auto shop are significant cost advantages, increased architectural acceptance and advances in design versatility and production processes. It will take less time to construct a steel building than any other type of building.  Most auto shop buildings are done in the factory which will not allow for weather conditions to interfere.  Computer analysis and design are used to fabricate structural members with high strength-to-weight ratios, minimizing raw materials costs.

Other advantages are steel buildings will lower construction costs because manufacture of steel building systems allows the builders to substitute less expensive factory labor for much of the skilled on-site construction labor. Another great thing about steel buildings is that they can be modified quickly and economically before, during and after the building is completed to accommodate all types of expansion. This way, your steel auto shop building can be expanded by removing the end or sidewalls, erecting new framework and adding matching wall and roof panels.

Another fact to consider is that steel is one of the strongest materials and can withstand extreme weather conditions such as high winds, severe snow storms, hurricanes, and even earthquakes. They are also resistant to termites, creeping, cracks, splitting and rotting, and will increase durability. There are also options for reinforcing steel against vandalism and fire and most reputable steel building manufacturers offer a 25 year warranty which gives you immediate security when building your steel factory. All the above elements are extremely important for your auto shop, as your cars are ensured protection against all kinds of weather conditions.

Benefits of Insulation in your Steel Building

Are you concerned about how hot steel buildings will get in the summer time? We hope this will not affect your decision in purchasing a steel building because they are a popular solution to any building configuration. Steel buildings are the strongest and most durable because of the physical properties of steel.  Steel works great as a conductor of heat and the interiors can get hot during summer and cold in winter.  However, steel is susceptible to condensation.  Condensation is moisture that occurs through walls and roofs of the building and creates corrosion and mold.  To avoid mold problems, you can install vapor barriers on the walls and roofs of your steel building or you can just ensure that the steel building is properly ventilated.  The insulation is still highly recommended to avoid condensation.

The location and final use of a steel building significantly influences the type and amount of insulation needed for temperature control. For example, if you are using your steel building for storage and is usually occupied, you may want to consider installing insulation especially in the areas where it gets too hot or cold.  However, keep in mind that depending on the type of storage you are storing in your steel building, insulation may not be needed.

Another benefit of insulation is that it helps control the transfer of sound from one location to another, which is important for steel buildings used in commercial and agricultural applications.  Also, the use of insulation materials with a white facing brightens up the interiors of steel buildings because they reflect light more efficiently. This is a very popular choice among steel building owners.

Don’t forget that adding insulation maximizes the value of steel buildings and addresses many of the energy and moisture issues that compromise the performance of these metal structures. Don’t worry about the cost of insulation because it will pay for itself with the energy savings realized over the life of your steel building.

Now that you have read some of the benefits to insulation for your steel building, you may want to consider getting it installed. For more information on steel buildings and/or insulation, please visit: www.norsteel.com

Snow Guards for your Steel Building

Snow guards are used to keep the snow from sliding off of your roof; however they are not the most attractive component of a steel building.  You may find yourself of having to convince the architect that if they are even necessary as their aesthetic value is so low.  Most architects prefer very little snow guards on their roof.  Snow guards are capable of more than mere functionality.  One project in Alaska has shown that snow guards can enhance the look of a roof and even stand out as a nice feature.  The projects in Alaska which is called The Alaska Center for the Performing Arts and the Anchorage Rail Station, both utilize the SNOWBAR system which is manufactured by Action Manufacturing LLC, and distributed by Riddell & Co. Inc. and SnowBlox-SnowJax.

The Snowbar system can be curved to match the curves of the roofs.  One of the projects features more than three miles of snow guards and the other project features more than a mile of snow guards.   “The unique thing about both jobs is that the architect was using the snow guard not just for snow retention purposes, but for an architectural feature,” Said Paul Riddell, president of Riddell & Co. “That’s the unique aspect of these two projects; taking snow guards a step further as an architectural feature by incorporating them into the look of the job. They didn’t need that many rows for snow retention, but they wanted them every five feet on center to create more of a grid-type pattern on the roof.  “One of the biggest complaints we hear is, ‘When you put a snow guard on our roof, it takes away from the buildings’ look.’ We wanted to show that it can be part of the design process.”  Using a stainless steel clamp and bar, the Snowbar system can be left bare as on the performing arts center, or can be painted to match the roof as on the rail station. Because the clamp is stainless steel it can be used with all types of metal roofs such as copper and zinc.  The first project we talked about earlier features a stainless steel, standing-seam metal roof panel and the other project features a zinc panel.  All Snowbar systems can be painted to match the roof and the curving of the bar is great for preventing snow and ice from avalanching off a metal roof which will prevent damage to property, injury or death.  Also all stainless steel withstands weather.

So even though most of us think that snow guards are not the most attractive thing on a roof, most people consider using a small bar system over the entryway or the door.  And unfortunately, most of those small bar systems fail because they are not supported with multiple rows and bars.  Consider the two projects we talked about and hopefully this will shed some light on snow retention.

Steel Buildings are great for the Environment

With innovative building design, engineering and use of materials, pre-engineered steel buildings are leading the way in the Green building revolution.  Steel buildings are not only better for the environment but better for you too.  Here are some advantages to steel buildings:

-Steel buildings don’t require cutting down trees

-Steel manufacturers use materials with a high proportion of recycled content

-Employ sustainable building design and construction

-Buildings erect in less time than conventional building construction.

-They can lower insurance costs because Steel buildings are fire resistant

-They are rust resistant and maintenance free

-Steel manufacturers employ energy efficient methods in steel production that help to substantially     reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

-Steel can be recycled over and over again

-Most steel produced in Canada uses recycled material

-More steel is recycled than all other recyclable materials combined

Sustainable building also known as “green building design”, recognizes the environmental impact of buildings and works to make this impact much less through energy efficiency building materials that are, environmentally sound and innovative building design.  This will create a healthy indoor environment!    Steel buildings that are coated with cool coatings will use less energy in both the summer and winter and will make your building energy efficient.  Cool metal building coatings will reflect heat in summer, but also retain the heat inside the building on cooler days and will save you money on your heating bills. Cool coatings will reduce energy costs and you can even qualify for Federal tax credits.

Cool coating paints for roofs and side panels that steel buildings use, come in a wide variety of environmentally friendly building colors. Cool coatings are special paints with superior reflective qualities that act as a thermal barrier to keep the insides of steel buildings cool in summer. An “urban heat island” happens when urban concrete and asphalt construction absorbs heat during the day then radiates it back at night so that temperatures don’t fall at night as they normally would, and is a powerful contributor to climate change and global warming.

In Canada, commercial building construction is taking advantage of the cool properties of steel building metal roofs for commercial buildings such as: warehouses, industrial manufacturing plants, aircraft hangars, storage buildings, retail outlet stores, auto dealerships, strip malls and more.

Metal Workshops for Strength, Durability and Low Cost Construction

Ezine Articles recently posted an article about the benefits of steel garages, entitled “Metal Workshop Buildings for Your Favourite Hobby.” It mentions that many people tend to get a workshop to create sufficient space for hobbies not suitable for inside the house. These could be activities that are dangerous, such as woodworking, or just require more space than a typical living arrangement allows.

It mentions that while all types of workshop buildings are popular, ones made out of steel are especially outstanding because of their strength, durability and lower construction cost.

In terms of strength and durability, steel is a great choice become wooden buildings may not be suitable for activities that require heating or burning objects since fires may occur. Yet, if a building is made out of steel, it would not rot, collapse or catch fire easily. Even if a fire occurs in the steel workshop, there is no fear that the entire structure will collapse.

There is generally a lower construction cost since these structures are relatively easy to construct and in many cases, a general contractor is not even necessary! Using only minimal professional help will definitely cut construction costs. The structure is made of modular parts so it is easy to set up with less time and effort. Because the length can easily be increased by adding additional sections, increasing the size of the structure is relatively easy and will not require much additional engineering.

As pointed out, the above are just two of the major advantages for using a metal building for a workshop.

When it comes to metal buildings, Norsteel Buildings is ahead of the pack. Norsteel metal buildings have a rigid frame custom built out of the highest quality, heavy-grade steel available in the AZ165 Galvalume 8000 Series. The size of the structure, as well as the style and colours of the panels can be custom chosen for the project. With so many choices to make, do not hesitate to contact us to help you create that perfect workshop or workstation.

Defining Prefabricated buildings

A prefabricated building is defined is a type of building consisting of a factory-built components or units that are to be assembled on-site. Standardized sections can then be easily shipped and assembled on site.

In the U.S., manufactured homes, including mobile homes, are constructed according to the Department of Housing and Development (HUD), while modular buildings are constructed in accordance to the International Building Code (IBC). In Canada, the National Building Code of Canada is used as a guide.

There are three categories of ‘prefabricated’ buildings: modular, manufactured and mobile. These are buildings either made of built-in components, modules or sections. Although all three building types are similar, the methods of construction and design of the structure itself varies. Prefabricated buildings range from small storage sheds to custom designed multi-level residences. The three types are detailed below.

Modular Buildings

Modular buildings are constructed in sections then transported to the site for construction and installation. These are typically then installed and treated like a regular house, for financing, appraisal and construction purposes. This is the most expensive of the three and although the sections are prefabricated, the sections or models are assembled on private land, much like typical construction projects.

Manufactured Buildings

Manufactured buildings are those that are built onto steel beams and then transported in sections to the site where they are then assembled.

Mobile Buildings

Mobile buildings are structures built on wheels so that they can be moved according to need.

Photographic Panels

Photographic panels are a cool way to add some imaging to your panels.  Ombrae Imaging Technology is a popular new technology that uses light and shadow to create visuals on the paneling of your steel building.  How does it work?  Basically what happens is that Ombrae Technology breaks down an image into individual pixels.  Each pixel’s optimal reflective position is then calculated and punched into the Dri-Design wall panels.  It is then engineered to stay attached to the base panel.  The 3-D pixels act as reflectors to catch light or cast a shadow.  This creates a holographic image that presents slightly differing appearances depending upon the lighting and the view of angle.  In one situation, a parking  garage at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary, Alberta,  Ombrae panels were used by Bing Thom Architects, in Vancouver, to create the image of clouds that appear to be moving across the sky because of the way the light is reflected.  The Ombrae concept originated with the artist Quin.  Bing Thom introduced Quin to Ken Smith of Calgary-based Flynn Canada Ltd. (the SAIT project installer), who in turn introduced Quin to Dri-Design.Dri-Design President Brad Zeeff realized making these reflective images could be done with machinery.

Thom was fascinated with the idea of 3-D surfaces and wanted to experiment, he wanted to naturally ventilate the SAIT parking garage with perforated metal. Rather than just painting on an image, the Ombrae allowed him to create an image that was alive, changing colors depending on the angle at which you approach it, the color of the sky and even the season, as green leaves can reflect off the exterior façade.  “Rather than just a billboard, this has more life to it,” Thom said.  “I just thought it was a great technology and I could see it on parking structures, roof top mechanical screen walls, artwork for interiors—I thought this would be a great natural way of doing it without putting on any paint,” Zeeff said. “We’re dreaming and experimenting and testing, but we see Dri-Design with Ombrae in theaters because we believe the sound transmission will be awesome.I see it in lobbies, it could go into a curtainwall or glass window system. I see it as corporate logos …anywhere you want to design a theme or project a feeling.”

If  you’re wondering if a photographic panel would require special installation or maintenance requirements,  it actually is easily installed with ease and maintains the same kind of low-to-zero-maintenance quality you would expect from metal panels says Dri-Design.
