BIPV Popular for Saving Energy

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association of Washington, D.C., solar energy is one of the cleanest, abundant, renewable energy sources available today.

Solar power is allowing today’s technology to be captured, and is giving the commercial industry many ways to use both the heat and light of the sun.  Photovoltaics is one of the ways solar energy is captured and converts light energy to electricity.  It has been 20 years since California’s first solar electric generation station plants were built in the Mojave Desert, and the new millennium has seen PV (Photovoltaics) take center stage in a rapidly growing number of areas as research and production advances continue.

The building integrated PV market is a growing sector in the environmental search for continued energy-saving building materials.  BIPV (Building Integrated Photovoltaics) is becoming a popular way to use solar energy to generate electricity, particularly in the commercial industry.  It’s a solution for architects and building specifiers searching for a system that easily integrates into the building envelope.  While PV specifically refers to light electricity, BIPV is used to describe PV materials that are building-integrated to generate electricity while serving as construction materials, such as roofs.  The skin of the building produces electricity for the building, enough to power a part of or even the entire building.  Solar modules applied to the building envelope are able to satisfy building applications while generating power.

BIPV is aesthetically pleasing, cost-effective and a mainstream building powering technology.  Additional benefits to builders and architects include:

  • Upfront budget and return on investment
  • Functional value
  • Long life span
  • Low maintenance
  • Predesigned systems with CAD drawings and specifications
  • Integration with bidding documents
  • Competitive bidding by roof system subcontractors and electrical subcontractors

Thin-film technology is perfectly suited for use with the flat surface area channels in standing-seam metal roof panels because it is lightweight, flexible and less expensive to install than polycrystalline.  These advantages are making standing-seam BIPV one of the fastest growing segments of the PV industry.
